Artist Statement
Most of my work is driven by the idea of “co-creating spaces of belonging” as a concept through participatory research. Public art, activism, and collaborative exhibits as it relates to marginalized communities are my focus. My visual medium reflects the words
by scholar Gloria Anzaldua , “I write to record that others erase when I speak, to rewrite the stories others have miswritten about me, about you.”
When I researched the demographics of the neighborhood for the utility box I found from highest to lowest: Hispanic, Asian, Black, White, Mixed, and Other. I included the three highest segments as well as the energies of each direction: North (Elder), West
(Female), South (Children) and East (Male). The monarch butterflies moving between each person are symbolic for immigration.
Special thank you to all the models for this piece: Josie Porras, Mimi Chuong, JAH ‘Sol Amaru Porras, Velveth Sophia Escamilla, and Jesse Ocelotl Ortiz.
