Artist Statement
Donine has a passion for all types of art mediums and for the last several years has been focusing on Mixed Media and Public Art Commissions. In the 70s, she created batiks and macrame as wall hangings and sculptural pieces and won awards in several art fairs. In the 80s and 90s, her career in Graphic Design gave Donine an opportunity to learn digital art. Some recent gallery showings for her mixed media have been at the Tim Collom gallery, Adamson Gallery, the Sacramento Temporary Contemporary Gallery, ArtHouse, Hot Italian Restaurant in Sacramento, the Rancho Cordova City Hall, Davis Art Center, ACAI of Carmichael, Blue Line Gallery in Roseville, and Blue Wing Gallery in Woodland, California. She has also shown her art at various art festivals and venues in and around Northern California, and has collectors of her work all over the nation. She also has had Public Art Commissions from the cities of Chattanooga, TN, Sacramento, CA, Rancho Cordova, CA, Davis, CA, and San Francisco, CA.
Donine loves the creative process of taking various media and seeing what beauty will emerge. Although she starts with a certain idea in mind, to her joy, the piece usually takes on a life of its own with "happy accidents" along the way. Her influences, and what she likes to portray in her work, come from urban industrial and old world European textures and patinas. Being a Graphic Designer for 20 plus years also has an effect on the balance and composition of her art. Donine Wellman lives in Klamath River, California, with her husband Sid, who is also an artist.
